Introducing the 2025 Student Leadership and Advisory Council (SLAAC)
Swipe Out Hunger is thrilled to launch its second year of the Student Leadership and Advisory Council (SLAAC), a cohort of 15 college student leaders representing 15 campuses and 12 states. After a successful launch of the inaugural cohort, SLAAC continues to represent the collective student voice that is central to Swipe’s mission to end college student hunger.
Cohort members will meet monthly from September 2024 to April 2025 to exchange ideas and assess the organization’s current resources and programs while engaging in opportunities for professional development and community building. Their experiences and input will be especially invaluable as Swipe implements its new three-year strategic framework.
“I was excited at the opportunity to collaborate, work with, and learn from student leaders from around the country all fighting to end college student hunger and break down stigmas surrounding food insecurity,” said Josh Newburg, current SLAAC member and student at Oakland University. “Our pantry manager was part of SLAAC last year, and I saw how much our pantry was able to grow in its program development, community outreach, and political advocacy thanks to the insight they gained from SLAAC. I’m excited to continue this legacy, keep learning from other student leaders, and offer my experiences and unique perspectives to work towards ending college student hunger.”
In the past year, SLAAC members participated in multiple speaking engagements and panels, helped shape Swipe’s new strategic plan, and connected with one another to strengthen each other’s programs. This year, the council will be led by Sage McCoy, Student Education and Engagement Manager at Swipe.
Congratulations and thank you to these 15 student leaders for their outstanding work in their communities and dedication to the mission and values of Swipe Out Hunger:
