Partnering for Student Success: Swipe Out Hunger and TIAA Expand their Impact

In a time where barriers to food access for college students are changing, campus programs are also facing challenges and pursuing innovative ways to meet student needs. Swipe Out Hunger is championing solutions and building an active network to support food security programs and partnerships are critical to making that happen.

That’s why we are proud to continue our growing partnership with TIAA, whose commitment to student success is fueling the movement in meaningful ways.

TIAA has contributed $56,000 in direct funding for food security programs with significant First Generation student populations through the Swipe Grants program, empowering campuses to increase capacity, improve infrastructure, and maintain stock. Across our campus network, funding remains the top challenge— 39% of programs rely on donations as their primary source of funding. This investment has unparalleled impact, providing support for campus leaders nationwide who are adapting and innovating to meet the needs of their students.

Beyond funding, TIAA is also making an impact through employee engagement. The organization hosted 10 volunteer events across the country, where employees packaged meal kits, including grab-and-go snacks, nonperishable items, and personal care products, for local campuses. These events not only generated resources, but also fostered a stronger sense of community between employees and their community. You can support your local college students, too— check out our Food Drive Guide to learn how to host a drive on your campus or workplace.

Most recently, TIAA participated in our Swipe Session webinar, “First Gen Forward: Strengthening Support for Trailblazing Students,” where campus leaders learned best practices and gained insight into building more equitable food security programs. Graduating from college is a significant milestone for first-generation students and their families, but they often are required to navigate additional obstacles while in college, including an increased risk of experiencing food insecurity. Through this partnership, TIAA has provided valuable resources for our campus network and their communities, like the First Generation Student Success Guide.

Partnerships like this are essential to meeting student needs in a changing basic needs landscape. Together, we are uplifting first generation student experiences and strengthening campus communities through resource sharing, community building, and program funding.

Swipe Out Hunger is uniquely positioned to bridge gaps and build cohesion within the movement to end college student hunger, and we need partners like TIAA to drive change. To learn more or explore partnership opportunities, visit swipehunger.org/supportus.
