ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Director of Community Engagement leads and facilitates Swipe Out Hunger’s community-based interventions to eliminate student hunger in higher education by leveraging and mobilizing efforts of community members both on and off campus.  This position will encourage community-driven movements and solutions, connecting state and regional trends across the nation.

This new role will be heading up a brand new department whose goal is to sustain coalitions and movements to end college student hunger. The position will build, from the ground up, a framework that connects students, community partners, and campus administrators or, in states that have already developed this movement, ways Swipe Out Hunger can enhance their incredible work. They will have their own state(s) portfolio to engage while hiring and supporting their regional team members and their dedicated portfolios. Pulling from subject matter experts in our programs and advocacy departments, this role and future team members, will bring together the resources, connections, and community needed to elevate this movement. This position will work remotely and will report to and work closely with the leadership team to build strategy and initiatives that solve college hunger.

Responsibilities:

  • Community Engagement and Advancement
    • Lead Swipe Out Hunger’s expansion into state, regional, and population-focused interventions to solve food insecurity in higher education.  
    • Join or form, if not already established, statewide coalitions and facilitate coalition meetings that bring in diverse partners into the campaign and community solutions in each of our focus areas.  
    • Work with the Mission Impact team to establish relationships with pantry staff on campus and connect staff to student leaders, elected officials and key partners. 
    • Identify new campus partners and direct to relevant regional or population-based resources as well as encourage participation in network engagement opportunities (e.g. NCCSEN, Swipe sessions, affinity groups, etc.)
    • Facilitate student leadership initiatives that will encourage students and campus staff to join the movement.   
    • Hold in-district and on-campus events that involve multiple stakeholders including but not limited to, students, campus staff, funders, community champions, the media & elected officials, to highlight the issue/campaign.
  • Communications & Media Relations
    • Create materials for events, including but not limited to: fact sheets, flyers, social media posts, and posters, in collaboration with the Communications department.
    • Build proposals for and present at national conferences that enhance Swipe Out Hunger’s mission and initiatives.
    • Coordinate with the Communications department to organize story collection and media opportunities.
    • Coordinate and operate outreach channels for the campaign that educates audiences on the issue of college student hunger.
  • Leadership & Management
    • Be a key thought partner to teams/projects around operational strategy and systems improvement
    • Co-create department and campaign budgets, ensuring projects are on time and within budget
    • Supervise and mentor Community Engagement Department team members who each have either a regional or specific population focus.  Duties include co-creating and monitoring staff performance goals, conducting annual performance reviews, and recommending salary adjustments

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications are representative of the high level of demonstrated skills, maturity, judgment and ability to work with a wide range of constituencies required of Swipe Out Hunger employees:

  • 5+ years of experience in a role-related work, preference to experience at a community-oriented nonprofit
  • At least 3 years managing a cross-departmental function, experience coaching and developing individuals, managing complex projects, and maintaining a department budget
  • Experience in navigating the systems of higher education as a student, completion of a higher education degree in a related field preferred

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary of $85,000. Swipe Out Hunger provides a supportive benefits package, including:

Part 3: Follow-up Interview with members of the Swipe Out Hunger staff: We will invite finalist candidates to a focused follow-up conversation to dig deeper into specific themes and topics from the virtual interview day and writing sample.

Part 4: Reference Checks, Offer Extended: Swipe Out Hunger will ask for 3-4 references per finalist, though we often ask for more. We encourage finalists to ask more questions about working at Swipe Out Hunger.
